Helmsley Group delivers and sells York city centre EV charging hub

Helmsley Group has sold the E.ON Drive EV charging hub off North Street, York, to Merseyside Pension Fund. The hub was a Helmsley development taken from planning consent through to a let and operating site.

It provides eight ultra-rapid charging bays served by four charging units. The hub opened for public use towards the end of March 2026.

Helmsley Group secured planning consent for the scheme and carried out the site development works. The civils, the substation and the power connection were completed before the site was handed to E.ON to install its chargers.

The site extends to 0.08 acres within a car park serving the adjacent offices, retail and Travelodge hotel. It has the benefit of a 960kVA power connection, which is rarely available in York city centre given the current limits on power supply in the city.

The hub sits in the Micklegate quarter, accessed off North Street on the west bank of the River Ouse. Bridge Street gives direct access across the river to the city's main retailing core.

Max Reeves, development director at Helmsley Group, said: "The value in this site was always the location. We started off this project with an entirely different vision, with a planned zero carbon hotel. Ultimately, we resolved that the site was extremely well located to meet the growing demand for EV charging and were able to secure a 960kVA supply.

"We secured planning, carried out the civils and delivered the substation and connection before handing the site to E.ON. The result is a 20 year lease with no breaks, a parent company guarantee and indexed reviews.

"EV charging is still a young market. We learnt a lot from this project and hope to deliver more EV sites going forward."
